WATER SUPPLY NETWORK

The water supply network of MPWiK (Municipal Water and Sewerage Company) is extremely extensive. It is 1970 km long. Of course, along with development of Wrocław the number of kilometres is increasing each year. Because the responds dynamically to the growing needs of the city and its residents by building new networks in the new residential areas in all those places where are built new office buildings and industrial plants.

Concurrently with the construction of new water supply network MPWiK is modernizing intensively the already existing pipelines. The company places a special emphasis on renovation of the largest water pipelines – water mains, which represent more than 10 percent of all water supply network in Wrocław.

To ensure the modernization works to be as little inconvenient for residents as possible, MPWiK seeks to perform them by trenchless methods. Wherever possible the modernization works take place at the same time as repairs of streets. In this way the residents of Wrocław avoid situations where the same road section is closed twice – one time due to repair of road, and another time due to modernization of water supply network. Another plus of this solution – the modernization costs decrease considerably.

WATER BEARING AREAS

These are 1026 hectares meadows and ponds located 6 km southeast from the city centre, and within the city of  Wrocław and the municipality of Święta Katarzyna. This area was purposed for water treatment already at the end of the 19th century. It was possible to use it for this purpose, because the area was covered by a grid of drainage ditches, infiltration ponds and water pumping stations. The first water wells and pipelines were built in the years 1902-1904. At this time also the Świątniki – water pumping station was brought into operation.

FIRST OF ALL – TASTE

Like at the beginning of the 20th century water from the Oława River is pumped to the water bearing areas by the Czechnica  pumping station. It is led to 21 km – long irrigation ditches and channels. From there it is distributed to 63 infiltration ponds of the total area of nearly 60 hectares. The amount of water distributed to each single pond is regulated by various flaps.

On their efficient work depends the efficiency of the infiltration process which is to give surface water better properties of groundwater. Responsible for that are many biological, chemical and physical processes which take place many weeks during water retention in the soil.

Water undergoing the infiltration process is collected from the whole territory of water bearing areas. For this purpose are used 558 intake wells, which deliver water by pipelines to three water pumping stations: RadwaniceŚwiątniki and Bierzany. The characteristic points on the route of flow of already quality improved water are the historical ventilation towers. The function of these architecturally attractive buildings, many meters high, fitting in perfectly with the surroundings, is to maintain vacuum in the siphon pipelines, making it possible for water to be delivered without problems to the Na Grobli Water Treatment Plant, and from there to flats and houses of Wrocław residents.

EXTRAORDINARY “CLEANING MANIAC”

The water bearing areas are not only the water intake points. They are also „the green lungs” of the Lower Silesian capital and a k even 12 million cubic metres water. Fortunately, they are not used to often for this purpose. Thus, although the water bearing areas are located only a few kilometres from the centre of Wrocław there live here rare animals. Among others otters, beavers, roe deer, herons and pheasants. A most striking evidence however that in close proximity to a bustling city of 700 thousand inhabitants it was possible to preserve the natural environment that not only has to adapt itself through human intervention and changes made by us, but also can develop freely,  is the discovery of a new invertebrate in the global fauna – Brachylecithum glareoli.

The fact that the water treatment plants of Wrocław use an exceptional material, is confirmed by freshwater sponges. These purity bio-indicators live in the most infiltration ponds. Thanks to entry prohibition in water bearing areas an another “hygienist” can be found there. This is Sisyra terminalis. It is one of the alderflies and an extremely unique insect in our country that it has even not a Polish name yet, and its occurrence has been evidenced at only six places. The water bearing area of Wrocław is the seventh place.

WATER TREATMENT PLANTS

Water, which provides MPWiK comes primarily from the mountains. It is taken from the Oława river fed in turn by the Nysa Kłodzka . Sources of the latter are in the Sudetenland . Mountain water is 99 percent of the raw material used by MPWiK . The remaining 1 percent is water from the deep well of Leśnica , which goes to the inhabitants of this settlement.

Water from Oława and Nysa Kłodzka thanks to metastatic Michałow near Opole combine , and then go to the two Wroclaw’s Water Treatment Plant : “Mokry Dwor ” and ” The Causeway ” . For the first directly to the plant ” The Causeway ” after preliminary treatment areas aquifers. The water in both plants is treated by modern sand filters and carbon . Then through of over 1,970 km water supply goes to the homes of Wrocław and several villages near Wrocław , including Olawa , Długołęka , St. Catherine and Kobierzyce . Thanks to continuous investments in modernization of both plants and distribution network , water taste from year to year improves. It meets the most stringent standards , and its parameters persists water supplied to the inhabitants of many European cities

Despite the shortage of water in our country , of Wroclaw drought in the taps is not safe. The city is protected because the two reservoirs on the river Nysa Kłodzka – ” Głębinów ” and ” Otmuchów ” . Gathered in their reserve 5 billion liters , we guarantee the normal supply of Wroclaw , even for a few months catastrophic drought.

On the huge growth of water demand MPWiK it is also prepared. Performance -treatment plant “Mokry Dwor ” and ” The Causeway ” can still almost double increase its supply . Today each of Wroclaw per day consumes 116 liters of water , which is more or less what fits in the half -filled tub. Average water consumption from year to year , but declining. This is due to the growing popularity wodooszczędnego appliances. They not without significance for this fact are also MPWiK investments in water supply . With the loss of water caused by failures are much smaller than a few years ago .

NA GROBLI WATER TREATMENT PLANT

The „Na Grobli” Water Treatment Plant is supplied by preliminary treated water from the water bearing areas. Taste of water was improved in January 2007 after installing modern carbon and sand filters. This investment of nearly 100 million PLN allowed to reconstruct completely the plant which supplies now water as clear as it would flow directly from a mountain river.

The Plant at the Na Grobli  St. started its operations on 1 August 1871.  One of the remains from that period is the historical water tower „Na Grobli”. Although the history of water supply in Wrocław dates back to the 13th century, it is from this date that is counted modern operation of the Wrocław water supply network. The reason why the city councillors wished to erect this building then and not to restore the Main Mill, you will find in the brochure  presenting the history of one of the most beautiful  European industrial monuments  – the water tower at the Na Grobli St.

WATER TREATMENT PLANT "MOKRY DWÓR"

Taste of water supplied by  „Mokry Dwór” WTP was improved after replacing partially sand filters by the carbon filters in June 2005.  Carbon filters remove better the finest particles and chemical compounds in water. The inhabitants of Wrocław could feel again another change in autumn 2007, when was renewed the water ozonisation installation. Ozone has disinfecting properties and purifies water by removing microorganisms and bacteria. It decomposes also very fast. It is important, because in contrast to chlorine or chlorine dioxide it does not change taste or odour of water.

The Mokry Dwór WTP was put into operation on 15 August 1982.  This date will surely remain long in memory of many Wrocław inhabitants, because before this date water under normal pressure was available only for two hours a day. Why? You can read about it in the brochure about the history of the construction of the Mokry Dwór WTP  – „A Quarter of Century for Wrocław”.

RESEARCH STATION ZPW "MOKRY DWÓR"

NEW LOOK FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY CLEAN WATER November 4, 2014 r . , Was opened research station IG “Mokry Dwor ” . It is a modern building , in which the laboratory can test new technological solutions in water treatment.

Water is a substance essential to life each of us. It may contain a number of ingredients, some of which is needed for proper development of the human body, and is part of the impurities, the content of which should be limited to a minimum. The content of the individual components in water is strictly controlled by government authorities. Due to the continuous tightening of standards for water intended for human consumption are increasingly looking for solutions to optimize the processes of purifying water in order to provide consumers with the highest quality product while maintaining the lowest possible operating costs. These effects can be achieved by continuous changes in operating systems, water purification, or through the implementation of modern technologies. To make the right decisions regarding changes in the water purification process, it is necessary to perform blood tests confirming the legitimacy of the introduction of new solutions, both operational and technological.

Construction of the research station will allow the faithful reproduction of the work of the existing technological system , eg . Water production plant , and compare it with the system , which will be applied to new technical and technological systems . This approach is key to the development of not only individual companies but the entire water industry . Cutting-edge companies in the United States and the European Union are successful based on the philosophy of conduct . Water intended for human consumption is an essential product for life and the economy of the country , therefore, the philosophy has to be postponed also Polish industry tap water

Work on the project lasted in 2013-2014 . The complex consists of a technological hall , a fully equipped laboratory stand , and facilities socio – technical . The building is prepared for further development through the construction of new installations , emerging with the development of the water supply industry.
The research station will be possible to carry out research both on streamlining current processes used , as well as modern techniques of water treatment plants , which have been selected as interesting in the analysis of the raw material used in ZPW”Mokry Dwor ”

The main part of the station consists of a sequence of reference and within the research built in a modular fashion . Reference string reflects the existing layout of the Department of Water Production “Mokry Dwor ” and a string of research can test new solutions and technologies . It is planned to examine the research station technological systems using advanced separation processes , for example . Integrated membrane systems , or magnetic anion exchange

The test stand is equipped with a monitoring system for collecting information on basic physical and chemical parameters , which allows for ongoing coordination of the work of the whole technological system and subsequent data analysis. In order to reliably assess the technology on the hydraulic and economically , the station has been equipped with systems for measuring flow, pressure and energy consumption . The measurement of the latter parameters to effectively measure the cost of energy, which is an extremely important element necessary for making investment decisions . This aspect is often overlooked when conducting research, and is extremely important because of the costs. Research station also has a huge scientific potential . With its launch it will be possible to strengthen cooperation between MPWiK and academia . It will be possible to carry out a number of scientific and research and development projects

Water Treatments Plant on Na Grobli street  mainly supply the inhabitants of the center and the north – eastern part of the city . It provides a day average of 61,000 cubic meters, which is half of the treated water at the time by MPWiK . By using the latest technologies at the plant , Wrocław drinking water quality can compare itself and often even surpassing,  that they deliver water companies in major European cities . Just like their product, so the water Wroclaw MPWiK meets the rigorous standards of the European Union.

"LEŚNICA" WATER TREATMENT PLANT

The „Leśnica” Water Treatment Plant uses high quality ground water which taste almost equals spring water. Its deposits are at the depth of 128-134 meters below the ground surface. The station is exclusively of local relevance; it supplies water to several thousand inhabitants of Leśnica and a few surrounding residential areas. Its daily production is approx. 1000 m3 which is less than 1% of water supplied by MPWiK.
